On Saturday May 1, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. former Frontiers Foundation Board Member Larry Leone Niford welcomed everyone to our charitable fund raising concert held at Rosedale United Church in Toronto. Chief Leone spoke briefly about the nature of our Aboriginal voluntary service organization and introduced the East York Barbershoppers chorus under the direction of Pat Hannon.
The East York Barbershoppers, this year, are celebrating the 60th anniversary as a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, an a cappella singing organization with 30,000 members in 800 chapters. They have raised close to half a million dollars for worthy causes such as the one for Frontiers Foundation. This group of singers will continue giving guest performances to different community service projects and local charities.
Most of the 34 members of this chorus join for the thrill of bringing their unique style of 4-part close harmony chords, and then get hooked on the strong fellowship that soon develops by raising their voices in song with other barbershoppers.
Barbershoppers President Allan Spence.explained the history of the group and invited the audience to stand up and sing the Canadian national anthem with them, followed by vocal affinity, TNQ, replacement parts and voisterous quartets.
Bill O’Hara was powerfully majestic on the Grand piano, involving the crowd with old favorites like “It’s A Sin to Tell A Lie” He also entertained the audience with stand up comedy.
During the intermission, ticket #030 won the “Home of the Spirit” prize.
Charles Catto and Marco A.Guzman on behalf of Frontiers Foundation/Operation Beaver were there to express their heartfelt thanks to all who came to enjoy the uplifting evening. Thanks to the East York Barbershoppers, Rosedale United Church, the volunteers who helped at the event, and Chief Larry Leone Niford.
